And yes, you are right. Whatever condition they are in when they arrive is how they will stay (until a healer finds them or they get dragged to the hospital), so it would be best to pick a canon point where Gohan is not mortally wounded.
Also, dead characters can be apped, but they would have to be apped prior to their death in canon.
